Stella Polare Onlus Project

Stella Polare Onlus Project (Italy) In Sicily more than one in five members of the working-age population is unemployed, and almost half of all island residents are either poor or at risk of poverty. Sicily seems wealthy, and yet is falling further and further behind, not just in comparison with industrialized northern Italy, but with the rest of the Mezzogiorno (southern Italy).
The objectives is to bring the “street on the roof” - roof top football yard, etc. Through the activities with the children, the aim is also to come in contact with the parents and other adults. Part of the warehouse will be departmentalized where adults get support for their basic necessities. Several ideas are suggested and preparation are on the way:
Food Bank
That is, a supply of food items to low and very low income families, not free of charge but rather in exchange for packaging materials such as plastic, paper, tin cans and glass jars. Such barter concepts is to educate people to recycling waste and to prevent the formation of dependency toward welfare handouts.
Support in improving families’ poor living quarters conditions
This program called “Do it Ourselves Emporium” in cooperation with Leroy Merlin, a large DIY outlet chain, offers 2000 euros worth of building materials per family in exchange for their manpower to be used in improving another family’s home. FSPO will coordinate the interaction between Leroy Merlin and the beneficiary families, taking care of their applications, maintaining a stock of common building materials and running a free tool bank.
